How to Install Wallpaper
Transforming your walls with wallpaper is easier than you think! Follow these simple steps to install your wallpaper perfectly:
1. Gather Your Tools
You’ll need:
- Wallpaper rolls
- Measuring tape
- Wallpaper paste (if not peel-and-stick)
- Sponge or cloth
- Sharp utility knife or scissors
- Smoothing tool (or plastic scraper)
- Level or straightedge
- Bucket and brush (for paste application)
2. Prepare Your Walls
- Clean the Surface: Ensure the wall is clean, smooth, and dry. Remove any dirt, dust, or grease.
- Fill Imperfections: Patch holes or cracks and sand them smooth.
- Prime (Optional): For best results, use a primer to create an even surface for the wallpaper.
3. Measure and Cut the Wallpaper
- Measure the height of your wall and add 2–3 inches extra at the top and bottom for trimming.
- Roll out the wallpaper and cut it to size using a sharp utility knife.
For Patterned Wallpapers: Match the pattern while cutting the next strip.
4. Apply Wallpaper Paste (if required)
- Lay the wallpaper face down on a flat surface.
- Apply a thin, even layer of wallpaper paste to the back using a brush or roller.
- Let the paste sit for a few minutes as per the instructions on the paste packaging.
Note: Skip this step for peel-and-stick wallpapers.
5. Position the Wallpaper
- Start from a corner or a straight edge, like a door frame.
- Use a level to ensure the first strip is perfectly straight.
- Align the wallpaper at the top of the wall, leaving a bit of excess to trim later.
6. Smooth and Secure
- Gently press the wallpaper against the wall, starting from the top.
- Use a smoothing tool or plastic scraper to remove air bubbles and ensure it adheres evenly.
- Work your way down and outward to avoid creases.
7. Trim the Excess
- Use a sharp utility knife to trim the excess wallpaper at the top, bottom, and edges.
- Cut carefully around switches, sockets, and corners.
8. Repeat the Process
- Line up the next strip of wallpaper, ensuring the pattern matches seamlessly.
- Overlap slightly at the edges, and smooth it down as you did with the first strip.
9. Final Touches
- Wipe off any excess paste using a damp sponge or cloth.
- Allow the wallpaper to dry completely (refer to the paste or product instructions for drying time).
Tips for Success
- Work in Small Sections: Don’t rush; focus on one strip at a time.
- Extra Hands: For larger areas, having an extra pair of hands can make the job easier.
- Lighting: Install in good lighting to spot air bubbles or misalignments.
